Saying good-bye to a man I've never met....

UPDATE: God heard our cries for Maverick's suffering to be short-lived. He went home to be with Jesus this morning at 4:30am. Thank you Lord for your mercy....... Please continue to lift up Donna and her family as they begin to cope with the reality of losing their husband, father and son.

I walked into the hospital room today, not knowing what to expect.  My sweet friend Donna was there, sitting beside the hospital bed, gazing at her husband who is in his last hours on this earth.  She looked up at me and our friend Kim, gave us both that big beautiful smile that she is famous for and motioned for us to come closer.  She stood up and gave us both hugs then I turned to look at her husband, Maverick.

I've known Donna for a couple of years now, but had never gotten to meet Maverick.  She spoke of him constantly and I had always hoped to meet him someday, but not like this.  The drugs that were keeping him relatively pain-free had also made him non-responsive by now.  The sadness inside of me was jolting.  How could this be happening to my friend?   A week ago, she had no idea that she would be facing such a loss.  A week ago, she was home with her husband and 2 children, living life as she had lived it for years now.  A wife, a mother, and a friend with a true servants heart. -- Yes, Maverick had been having alot of back pain, but no one had any idea that the cancer had returned.  Returned with a vengeance.  Now, here she was, just waiting on her husband to leave his cancer stricken body and go be with our Lord.  Way too young.  Way too soon.

How do you say good-bye to a man you've never met?  His eyes were closed and he wasn't speaking, but she assured me he could hear us.  I touched his arm and leaned in close to tell him I was praying for him and that his wife was special to me, so although we hadn't met, he was special to me too.

If you believe in the power of prayer, I ask you to please put my friend Donna, her husband Maverick, and their children in your prayers tonight.  Pray that Maverick doesn't suffer.  Pray that Donna is lifted up by God's strong hand as she faces losing her man of 24 years.  Pray that their children, Maverick's parents, and ALL who love him can find some comfort and peace through their hurt and grief.

Life is short.  Shorter for some.  Our days are numbered, and we never know which one we're on.  Thankfully, there is another place for us to go after this life.  A beautiful, wonderful, perfect place where there will be no more pain, tears and suffering.  Go peacefully dear Maverick....

John 14:1-4
"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going."
